Monday, June 14, 1999 Reconstruction of SerbiaDan, home.com Q: There is much talk in the West about the re-construction of Kosovo, but very little about the re-construction of Serbia. How do you think the re-construction will happen if the current government stays in power? The West does state that there won't be no money invested in Serbia if the current regime stays on power. On top of that, the devastation Serbia suffered during the bombings completely destroyed what was left of Sebia's infrastrucutre and factories. Some estimates of experts state that Serbia is now back where it was at the beginning of the century. The government keeps talking about quick recontruction - president Milosevic said that the bridge in Beska will be repaired completely in 40 days only. That is obviously not possible, but they're trying to keep the people calm and not to show real proportions of destruction. Just investing some money won't be enough. Yugoslavia needs to be readmitted in the IMF and other organizations for full and effective reconstruction. Whether it will happen now or 15 years from today is up to Milosevic and his staying on power. |
