Friday, May 21st, 1999 How did Tito keep everybody in line?Q: What does Yogaslvia mean? It is spelled Yugoslavia. It means Land (state) of Southern Slavs. Q: How did Tito keep everybody in line? Tough question. How to explain everything that happened for 50 years in a few lines? Let's just say that anyone who thought different was in danger to be prosecuted and then be on Goli Otok for years and treated there very inhuman (Goli Otok is a jail on a small island in Croatia). If you were member of the Party you had much more opportunities, but you had to do everything what is said to be right. Freedom of speech and other freedoms were efficiently suppressed, but many people think that that got us to wars in post Tito period. Once when people felt that they could express anything, the lowest "human" feelings came on surface. Nationalism (re) appeared and wars started. There is some examples of Albanians-Serbs "relationship" in that time in first part of this article by Zoran Milutinovic, University Professor. Q: Are there any Jews left? If you want to ask if all Yugoslav Jews were killed during World War II - some of them survived (and most of survivors lived or live in Serbia). Isabell from webtv.net |
