Sunday, March 28th 1999. Letter to a Serb patriotRespected comrade patriot I have just returned from a protest meeting which was held 28th of March in front of the "Ederle" American barracks in Vicenza. I didn't regret it, our people has, decently and without a single incident, let anyone know that they're not only against what NATO analysts call "preventing a humanitary catastrophe", but that they have manners, respect the law and rules of conduct in the country where they live. I felt fine at this gathering, and shouting in a collectivity helped me to get somewhat rid of the horrors that the news coming from the country induced into my soul. With us, citizens of Serbia, there were many Italians as well, first of all PDS members and the Green, and some of Bossi's league, who are taken for the hardest core Italian separatists, could be noticed. There were about ten thousand of us there, and that's, if you didn't know, the new, recent emmigration, who came to this country looking for sanctuary, running away from Milosevic's road to bliss. I saw your moustache smile while you listened to the news about all the world rising to "defend Serbia", about protests in some cities growing into fulltime wars against local police, with mostly local people taking part in them. Prone to so-called epic interpretation of political reality, you were convinced that it quite a normal phenomenon, since it's known that we were and are right, so we shouldn't worry about being getting support. Therefore you felt not the slightest need to ask yourself what runs this foreign people to clash with their own police, just because of some Serbia out there, lost in almost ten years of bloody Balkan circus. Well, you see, dear comrade patriot, I must disappoint you and tell you that people around the world don't protest for Serbia, but against the violence. They make no difference between violence in Serbia and violence in Botswana, they are against evil of any kind, no matter where it came from, and specially if it's created by people who are leading their own countries. I'll remind you: the members of D'Alema's PDS (Italian democratic party of the left, which is, thanks to a fragile coallition, currently in power) rushed against their own party headquarters in Rome not agreeing to the view of their representatives in government to support the NATO alliance's action. The protests are organized by the Green in Germany, whose leader is also the foreign minister of this country. The Greek are rioting, and their country is a member of the alliance. Many of the French chose the side of our protesters, and Vladimir Volkov, french writer, publishes his open letter titled "I am ashamed to be a French". None of this made him, or any others in Europe and the world with a differing opinion, be called a Serbian mercenary, sold soul or a traitor by his own people. THERE it is normal that people are thinking differently, and the governments are afraid of the public opinion as a devil of a cross. It's those and the like that you're getting support from now, though personally they are disgusted at your bolstering, primitivism and bad manners. They are disgusted as well, dear comrade patriot, at your personal, head and beard, keeping silent like a cunt while cities of Zagreb, Zadar were bombed, while Vukovar, Osijek and Vinkovci were devastated, while Sarajevo was systematically destroyed and its residents were led, by cannon and sniper fire, to the brink of collective nervous breakdown. You were silent about Srebrenica, and when columns of Serbian refugees moved into fleeing for hundreds of kilometers, you didn't let them into Belgrade, so they couldn't eventually upset you, and your soul of a whore couldn't shake of the ball-and-chain of party task assignment: do anything, but don't let "those fools", as your Leader called the people of Krajina, endanger his holy Rule. Later you gave them two blankets each and spread them into mouse holes, giving them right to remain silent, wait and stay fiercely away from questioning themselves what need did they for all this and who pushed them into it. And just remember, comrade patriot, how you laughed at Serbian intellectuals who knelt in Pioneers' Park demanding the end of war in Bosnia, how you called The Women in Black "Tudjman's whores", how you sniggered, looking at the tragically few groups of sad people who lit candles in our squares in memory of numerous inocent victims in Sarajevo. It was beyond your mind to say: listen folks, brothers, friends, Serbs, homeland is homeland, but crime is crime. Just like any dog, you were afraid to bark at your Master. Like the lowest scum you pretended nothing happened when local "patriotic" government made an economic embargo against Serbs in Bosnia. You didn't speak up when your "patriotic" state used pyramidal scheme of Jezda and Dafina banks to rob thousands of your fellow citizens. You supported each regime's attack upon the independent press, and you recomended to students, who were opposing one orthodoxly fascistic law of University, that it would be better if they "devote themselves to studying". You did things that any normal person would be ashamed of, while representing yourself as a heir and continuity to the great people of our history, the same people who are now turning in their graves for having destiny donate them such a slime and a coward for a successor. And now, when the bear started dancing in front of our common house too, you expect to be supported and admired for your courage and decidedness, ready as always before to cheat and lie, to decorate yourself with others' feathers. You are bragging about the bravery of your nation, which has nothing left but dispair. The nation which got nothing else to lose but its lives, having lost everything else already. And the greater the sacrifice and more blood flows, you will, just like any other vampire, be stronger, bigger, more ruthless. You always disgusted me, dear comrade patriot. Always. Now, more than ever. Zivoslav Miloradovic |
