In attack on Surdulica on 05-31-1999 night, 20 persons got killed, including very young men. 38 people were injured, and 50 wounded.
NATO said it could not confirm any civilian deaths, saying only it had attacked a military barracks and ammunition depot near the city. The Associated Press reported that journalists taken to the city described a scene of devastation, with 11 bodies lying under sheets outside the shattered medical complex and four others, those of elderly women, on stretchers in front of the retirement home. Two missiles hit the main building of the Special Hospital for Tuberculosis and Pulmonary Diseases. Two other missiles struck a retirement home within the complex, where 35 elderly people were living.

Two missiles hit civilian objects in the narrow center of the town, in the NATO attack on Surdulica, on April 27th, between 12 and 12:30 p.m. CNN reporter from the scene counted 16 civilan victims, of which 11 were children between 5 and 12 years old.
Relief crews are still clearing the ruines, because there is danger that there are more victims. Three days after the attack there are still bodies that couldn't be identified due to the shape they're in.
