With its attacks on power plants and electrical grid in Serbia, NATO entered in brutal collective retaliation phase of this war. Attacks on power plants with conventional and not with so called "soft" bombs, started in the night of 05-21-1999, leaving literally millions of people without electricity. As a result of lack of electricity majority of Belgrade don't have water for 4 days in a row (water supplies is less than 7%). It is also virtually impossibly, because of the same reason, to buy bread.

About 8:30pm on 05-20-1999 NATO attacked Jugopetrol fuel dump on Cukarica (Belgrade) for third day in a row. Only by miracle nobody was hurt, barring in mind that there was no air raid warning sirens before the attack, and one of the heaviest traffic Belgrade Street is going just beside the facility. Due to the attack, big fire occurred endangering nearby residential areas.

In probably the most grotesque attack from the beginning of the war NATO, with all its power, aimed little gas station in Kovilovo, in vicinity of Belgrade.

The building of Chinese Embassy suffered numerous direct shots. One half of the building is literally destroyed. On neighboring buildings window glasses are broken. By the Chinese Government there was something about 30 persons in the building at the moment of the attack. The building has been shot from the southern (New Belgrade) side. This means that the Embassy is not hit accidentally during the bombing of Yugoslavia Hotel, because the Hotel was attacked from the north (Danube) side, by other airplanes. Four Chinese citizens were killed and at least 20 injured.

NATO bombing heavily damages Yugoslavia Hotel. Western (Zemun) side of the Hotel suffered direct shot and completely is destroyed. On the other wing of the Hotel, as on the neighboring buildings windows are broken. It is for sure that there were guests in the Hotel during the attack, because the Hotel parking was full with cars, which are damaged. The office of Inex rent-a-car is destroyed, as the NISSAN dealer-ship. Your reporter counted 39 destroyed cars personally, and that was the part of the parking what wasn't destroyed completely and where you could count something. The only imaginable motive why Yugoslavia Hotel was the target is that the owner of Casino which is at the entrance of hotel was Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan, leader of paramilitary formation which was active during the war in Bosnia. Just like before, the Casino left undamaged, and the hotel is completely destroyed.

Most of the Knez Milos Street is closed as the majority of buildings in that street are damaged. The worst damaged are the buildings of Yugoslav Army HQ and the building of Serbian Government. The building of Serbian Government was left without the roof, and the bigger part of facade is on the fell down to the street. People are forced to walk through neighboring streets because bigger part of Knez Milos Street is closed. This walk around becomes walking on the glass. It was risky to walk on the streets because the glass is falling from the windows. Two blocks above and under the HQ there was no building with the whole window. People were carrying out full buckets of glass from the buildings, with broken window frames, broken parts of furniture...
Beogradjanka (Palace Belgrade), one of the symbols of the city is damaged too.

Queuing for bread in Belgrade. Due to the NATO attack on power grid in Serbia, bread supplying situation in Serbia is very hard.

|
|
|
Latest NATO airstrikes on power grid in Yugoslavia, affected 70 percent of Serbia. Most of the population suffered from blackout and lack of water supply. Reporters were taken by Yugoslav authorities to what appeared to be a difficult situation at the only hospital for premature infants in Yugoslavia. Anxious nurses shuttled from bed to bed at Institute for Prematurely Born Infants, hoping backup generators would keep their tiny patients warm and supplied with enough oxygen to stay alive. The outage was threatening the survival of some 70 babies, Dr. Slobodanka Ilic, the institute's director, told journalists. At one point, the institute wasn't able to keep the oxygen supply going for some infants, forcing nurses to ventilate the tiny children mechanically. One little boy suffered severe problems when his oxygen supply failed.

In Friday on 30th April Avala TV tower, in vicinity of Belgrade, was demolished by NATO. Tower was 202 meters high and it was one of the Belgrade symbols. Tower has no military significance what so ever, and by destroying that monumental facility NATO succeeded to stop state television broadcasting just for 10 hours.

In Friday on 30th April after midnight Belgrade suffered the heaviest attack of NATO. Buildings in the city centre, family houses in Cubura (residential area in the centre) and 2 TV transmitters. Belgrade paramedics centre reports that 38 persons were admitted to the Urgent centre. TV StudioB's (Belgrade TV station) shots clearly show pictures of the dead in Kneza Milosa street (near the Yugoslav Army Headquarters), as well as the picture of a man literally split in half who was still alive.
Three persons where killed. Two injured persons are still in critical condition. 27 people where admitted to other hospitals in Belgrade.

The Ostruznica Bridge, across river Save and part of future detour of E-75 high-way around Belgrade (main connection between Europe and middle-East), was destroyed in the recent NATO attack. Bridge was still under construction. By looking carefully in above photograph one can clearly see that right lane across bridge didn't exist (because it was not finished), as well as track to and from the Bridge. It is unclear what was the military significance of Bridge under construction, without road to and from it, and on top of all, more than 350km away from Kosovo.

The Modern Art Museum suffered damage when the Bussines centre "Usce" was hit.

|
|
|
Transmitter on the roof of business centre Usce was destroyed during last night's attack. Two missiles destroyed the antenna of local radio and TV stations Kosava and Pink, SOS sport channel and S radio. This twenty-four store building was hit several days ago. Whole building, including the studios of all of these media were destroyed during the first attack. TV transmitter was also destroyed and inoperative since the first bombing.
This is just one of the many transmitters that have been destroyed for the five weeks of the bombardment. TV broadcasting is very difficult throughout Yugoslavia.

On Friday, April 23rd 1999, around 2am, the building of the Serbian national broadcasting network was destroyed by NATO air forces. The building is in downtown Beograd, between a theater, St.Marko's Church, a club, the City Child Centre and the local market. The casualties could be clearly seen on footage broadcasted by a local TV station, Studio B.
A transmitter used for broadcasting abroad is also destroyed. It was used by foreign journalists situated in Belgrade.

Three NATO missiles hit a building called Usce Palace. This object was an exclusice business centre holding studios of Radio Television "Pink", Radio Television "Kosava", and various corporations. A couple of TV stations had transmiters located on the top of the building. The public mobile telephone system base cells were located on the top of Usce Palace. The Usce palace was the property of JUL and SPS, two leading regime parties.

A three-year-old girl Milica Rakic was killed in the NATO attack on Batajnica, the satellite suburb of Belgrade. Her death became a simbol of the meaningless loss of life of innocent civilians in this war. The fate of this innocent child and the suffering of her family clearly stay for the fate of all common people of this region.
